This ad is to make you think about saving the planet by not using too many paper towels. This is only made possible if the towel color is green, since green is an archetypal symbol of life - especially sine the remaining color is black, which is an archetype for death. The correct answer is a.

Is it not ironic that they are using paper to dry their hands, but the towel holder has paper in it?
ReplyDeleteThat's a valid argument and I would say that they do go hand in hand together. I would counter by saying that since it is a paper towel holder, it is expected to have paper towels in it, which would weaken the impact of the irony. Irony does have a good rationale for being chosen and I'm willing to agree that there are potentially two correct answers, but one maybe (at least in my mind) better than the other. Tests like this will often do crap like that. Have a reason for an answer and go with it. It will play out in the student's favor more times than not compared to just guessing.
DeletePoll the class and see which answer they determine is the best answer. If the class chooses irony, then we'll say this is a bad question and declare for them irony to be correct. :)
