The Doctor Will See You Now

Read the cartoon below:

The cartoon is an example of which literary term below?

a. idiom
b. understatement
c. hyperbole
d. irony

Scroll down for the answer.

a. An idiom is an expression where the meaning is more than just the literal meaning of the words. The phrase has a figurative meaning. Ex: My Uncle Geezer always says a bird in the hand is worth two in the bush. What he really means is that a sure thing now can be better than a chance of something more later.
b. This is also not right. The cartoon is not trying to underplay or under-describe a situation.
c. Yes! It is hyperbole. The patient is trying to say he has waited so much for this doctor that he can finish an article this time that he read when he waited for the doctor the previous time.
d. Irony. Nothing ironic here. Irony is a contrast between what one expects and what occurs. It is normal to wait in a doctor's office.

Thanks Gretchen!
