Something to Think about

Read the following quote by Walter D. Wintle:

If you think you are beaten, you are. If you think you dare not, you don't! If you want to win, but think you can't, It's almost a cinch you won't. If you think you'll lose, you're lost; For out in the world we find Success begins with a fellow's will; It's all in the state of the mind. Life's battles don't always go to the stronger and faster man, but sooner or later the man who wins is the man who thinks he can.

What is the purpose of this quote?

a. to explain why he has failed in life
b. to explain why he has succeeded in life
c. to inspire others to succeed
d. to discourage others from wasting their lives in false hopes

Scroll down for the answer.

Hopefully you were able to discern the author's tone as being positive, despite the fact that failure is talked about quite a bit in the passage.  If that was the case, you were able to narrow it down to b and c.  If you realized that he never talks about his own accomplishments, then you would have guessed correctly that the answer is c.
