Read the following passage:
In Romeo + Juliet, the newer movie, there is a scene early in the movie where the Montague Boys drive into a gas station. The gas station is called Phoenix Gas. It is here that we first meet Tybalt and the other Capulets.
You do not need anything else. Based on the above passage, what will happen here?
a. Romeo and Juliet will fall in love.
b. Juliet will first turn down Romeo, but will later fall in love with him.
c. The gas station will explode.
d. Tybalt will die.

In order to answer this question, you did not have to have read The Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet (in fact, it would not have helped you) and you do not need to have watched the movie. All you need to pay attention to is the name of the gas station. A Phoenix is a mythological bird that catches on fire every so often and emerges again from the ashes. Fire and gas do not go well together. This is foreshadowing (a hint of what will happen later in the story).
The correct answer is c.

This is the worst question I have ever seen.
ReplyDeleteAre you familiar with how a combustion engine in a normal car works under normal circumstances? How exactly do you understand gasoline as fuel? And the concept of “ignition” in a gas car? The name is a reference to how cars work. ??????
ReplyDeleteThat is indeed how the combustible engine works; however, you will not see gas stations advertising with fire for the very reason the general public will look at fire and gas stations as explosive in a negative manner. When you are answering reading comprehension questions, it always pays to consider what the author intended, not your own prior knowledge. This is usually refer to as 'author's purpose'. In this case, there was going to be an explosive ending to this scene and the director decided to foreshadow it with the mythologically explosive logo. Thinking from the author's perspective and not the reader (or your own) is a difficult skill for many readers to achieve.
DeleteI appreciate the response!
Have you seen any natural gas advertising ever?
