Haiku - Bless You!

 Read this haiku from Basho:


Sick on my journey, 
only my dreams will wander 
these desolate moors

  1. I'll help out with the correct answer here: it's B. The commonly used title for this is "Basho's Death Haiku" which pretty much gives away the answer, and the poet's biography will tell you that he dictated this haiku from his deathbed. Without that information, the symbolism should help provide students with enough clues to reach the correct answer. A "journey" is often used as an analogy for a lifetime, and the "desolate moors" may refer to the empty world that his spirit ("dreams") must wander for eternity.
